Los Angeles Kings: The Real Problem

Ok so Im a fan of the LA Kings and although I love hockey, I am not a pro or anything at deciphering game strategies and such. I will say one thing about this 2011-2012 season. In December Dean Lombardi decided to fire Head Coach Terry Murray and I really believe Murray was NOT the problem. I actually liked Murray. Last season we saw the Kings enter the playoffs in the first round and although many of those games were very good, the Kings seemed to just give up. Players just not skating well, no defense, no offense and no real effort to recover the puck. Thus leaving the result of the game to goaltenders J. Quick and J. Bernier.

So after the Kings released Murray they brought in interim Coach John Stevens. Then later hiring Darryl Sutter as the new coach. I do agree that Sutter has a decent record and many praise his coaching style but since his hire up to now, there has not been much improvement on the Kings bench. Many say Dustin Penner needs to go because of his lack of effort. I would agree. Now im hearing criticism about Jack Johnson, Anze Kopitar and Dustin Brown. I can see why all the criticism but this is a team effort and there are other players to be concerned about. Willie Mitchell, Alec Martinez, Rob Scuderi…the list goes on.

So I really dont believe that bringing in Darryl Sutter in place of Terry Murray was really the smartest choice. Most fans will say that as long as Dean Lombardi is the GM the Kings will never see a Stanley Cup. I think I agree. The Kings need to get everything together. Offense, defense, passing and PP kills. Last season the Kings were dominating on PP kills we saw them looking very well into the All-Star break then the shit hit the fan. Same as this year. Seems as though the team just has not gotten their rhythm. Jonathan Quick is praised as one of the top goalies in the NHL and he does prove it. Every goalie has their bad runs. This week has been one bad one for Quick. The truth is…..Quick can’t play the entire game by himself. He can black 38 shots in a game but if the team can’t produce the goals well…..just makes for a team committing suicide on itself. At the beginning of the season we saw the Kings negotiating contract with Drew Doughty and many fans I know say that he is not even playing what he is worth on that contract. The trade deadline is Monday and with the Kings playing the Wild Tuesday night on NBC Sports they need to make some serious moves for the good of the team. I happen to think Bernier is a decent goalie but it might also be time for the Kings to call up some players from the Monarchs. Being from Houston I also am a fan of the Houston Aeros in the AHL. The Aeros NHL affiliate is the Minnesota Wild. Over this season the Wild have called upon Aeros players to come in and play and let me tell you…those guys have done well. The Aeros star goalie is Matt Hackett and he moved up to play some NHL time and did very well.

Im not sure who the Kings have in mind or what they plan to do but im sure the Mayor’s Manor site has some good input. Hopefully Dean makes some smart moves for the better of the team. I dont think its too late to resurrect the team but for a playoff run….it might be too late to re-build a winning team. Last year the Ducks finished off the Kings in the first round. Even if the Kings had won that series they would have had an even tougher time against the San Jose Sharks. Again this year the Sharks are kicking ass in the Pacific. So really anything is up for grabs right now. The Kings are two points ahead of the Colorado Avalanche especially after tonight’s loss to them. So that 8th place spot is there. It can go any way right now. Hopefully the Kings can make some changes but I really would hate to see them enter the playoffs only to be the joke of the entire post-season run.

Go Kings Go!
See ya next month at Staples on the 24th for the game vs the defending champs, Boston Bruins.

Hockey Beard Game 6 @ Staples Center

So everyone counted out my Los Angeles Kings in Game 5. It was pretty much a given that people thought the Sharks would finish off the series in San Jose but the Kings held up and with an awesome performance by my favorite goalie Jonathan Quick who had a record saving goals in franchise and NHL history in a playoff game. Quick lived up to his name for sure Saturday night. So Monday night we take it to Game 6 back at Staples Center in Los Angeles. Its not over til we lose and if we play offense and defense like we did Saturday and Quick covers the puck as he did rather than letting the puck go to the defensive men. I say Game 6 even if the Kings lose will be one to watch.

So anyways I promised a pic of the facial hair growth for the hockey playoffs. Well, here it is…..Me in all my caveman entirety LOL

Houston We Have A Problem….

the famous phrase used to depict a problem in NASA’s space program. I was so busy today I didnt have time to hear the news or watch it so when I had some free time I read that Houston was passed up to receive a NASA Space Shuttle. This in many ways angers me. Being from Houston Texas I believe that the people of Houston deserved to have one of these pieces of American history. Johnson Space Center located in Houston is where all of the shuttle missions have been commanded. They lauched in Florida but everything was ran in Houston. Well I should say still is since there is one flight left.

I think the City of Houston was passed up for many reasons. One being the construction. Houston has a never-ending array of construction on roads. This has been going on for years. I was in high school when some of these projects began and yet today as a 35 year old man these projects are still ongoing. Makes it hard for travelers to go to the city and enjoy the day. Also, Houston is not considered a tourist attraction city. Considering the State of Texas and Houston being the largest city in the state, one would expect it to have numerous attractions. Sadly, Houston does not. Once the home of Astroworld, an amusement park with rides and such. Now that area is vacant. Supposedly sold to be made into more condominiums and apartments catering to the rich doctors and such that work in the medical district of the city. Houston has a large stadium called Reliant. This of course is by far no tourist attraction. Although many events take place there and the shitty Houston Texans football team, if you can call them one, plays there there is nothing special about this venue. The only real attractions Houston has to offer is The musuems. Again, nothing fancy and yet parking for the museum and the adjacent zoo is quite difficult and far too few spots to park.

Most people that are not from Houston won’t really have much to say on this issue but the people of Houston in part and the employees of NASA at JSC are disappointed that no Orbiter will make its final home in the most humid city in America! Well, i think it is! HA HA! Many argue about Los Angeles getting one and then New York. Well, I really can’t say much for New York but Los Angeles does have ties to the shuttle. In fact, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory is based in the Los Angeles area. Engineers that design and work on the functions of shuttle components and such work there. So its not really too much of a shock that California would be a home to Endeavour.

We look at the east coast of the United States and we see that three Orbiters will make their home there. One in New York, another in the Smithsonian and…….at Kennedy Space Center. This is where I have mixed thoughts as well. First, I understand that the Space Shuttle launched from Kennedy. The Assembly Building is also there where the Shuttle was put together and prepared for space flight. Everything from the SRBs to the External Tank. Since beginning of space exploration with the Shuttle Kennedy has been then primary and only location for the Shuttle. Houston taking control of flight functions and Telemetry. Sorry if I am confusing you with these terms but I have studied the Space Shuttle in-depth and know quite a bit about its basic functions. Kennedy would be a shoe in to get an Orbiter as many would say but if you think about it, it seems a bit selfish that Kennedy Space Center would keep a Shuttle there rather than in the location where it all begins. Houston is where astronauts train. Those entering the training program leaving their homes across the country and the world to go to Houston to train and learn the functions of zero gravity and space flight. I enjoy watching the NASA channel. Its so informative. So when I heard the news that Houston was passed up for a Shuttle it really pissed me off. Many say that it would be a fitting memorial to those that died in the Challenger explosion and the disintegration of Columbia but Houston does have a place called Challenger Park which is a memorial to those astronauts that lost their lives. Still though, many would argue that that is not enough. I can agree and disagree with this.

Many will have mixed emotions on this. As I sit here in my bus and watch the news I hear people speaking about the Shuttles as if they don’t really give a damn. Others that say their cities should not have received an Orbiter. Ive read the news from ABC 13 in Houston on their website and I can see why the people of Houston are upset. The history of the Space Program is Houston. Houston is Space City. Just look at Houston. Besides the soccer and football teams, professional sports teams in Houston are named after space affiliations. The Houston Astros, Houston Rockets, Houston Aeros….etc! In fact the Eighth Wonder of the World which now sits vacant but was once the iconic median for Houston is also named similarly. The Houston Astrodome was the home of the Houston Astros and former Houston Oilers (now the Tennessee Titans). It also was the home of the yearly Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. One of the largest rodeo events in the world! So with that said, it is quite easily seen why many residents of Houston are upset over this issue. The sad truth to this all is that the decision is final. Even the most bickering and petitioning of this will not bring a Shuttle to the City of Houston but one thing the people of Houston can take pride in is that Houston is where the Space Program operated. Without Command Center Houston there would not have been a Space Program to begin with. That is something that NO ONE even the United States Government and all the shitty politics can take away from Houstonians. Houston, yes there may be a problem but just remember, the talented individuals that command our space exploration and flights train in Houston and many even live there now. That’s something to be proud of no matter how you look at it because honestly, your Houston Texans will NOT be a super bowl team and nor will the Astros be winning a World Series title anytime soon!!

So rather than bitch and be upset about the Space Shuttle, do something positive and support the Houston Aeros Hockey Team in the AHL Playoffs!!! Kick some ass guys and beat the Indiana Rivermen!!!

Jesus, Your Not Welcome Here….Why?

you know I don’t goto church. not because i dont believe in a god but I just dont get up and go. Call me lazy. This blog isnt about that though. While reading the news on KTLA FOX I saw and article about Neal Thompson. A man that dresses like Jesus and has for the last 22 years e every Sunday. In those 22 years he has only been kicked out of two churches. So i read that he was recently kicked out of a church in Des Peres MO.

So im watching the video and the guy seems sincere in his actions. He just wants to rejoice and spread the word of God. He wanted to goto church at this location that day and was greeted by people telling him that he needed to leave. Worshippers at this church told him to sit in the back in the hallway or something. WTF? They asked him if he was a Christian and what religion was he.

My thoughts on this:

OK, is it really relevant what religion he is? Maybe he is a particular religion but wants to convert. People do convert religions. He is asked to sit in the back and then asked to leave. Is this really the way Jesus would want people to be treated? Aren’t churches supposed to make you feel welcomed? What if I was a muslim and some guy was trying to kill me and I entered the church looking for help. Would they ask me what religion i am before they offer to help me? Sadly I think many would. I can understand the boundaries of churches and the rules or whatever they live by but to ask a man to leave simply because he is dressed like Jesus. I think that is wrong.

How can people feel welcome to a new neighborhood and church if the people are mean ass biggots like this? When I was a kid an old woman slapped the shit out of me while I was attending church with a friend and his family. After the services I asked the guitar player if I could play his guitar because I had been taking lessons. He said, “sure. Just put it back when your done” he said. So i played it. I played some classical pieces my teacher had taught me. Some flamenco style stuff and the old song Greensleeves. This old lady that forgot something in the church came in and heard me playing this classical piece and she came over to me and yelled at me and then slapped the living shit out of me. She said and I quote, “you damn devil how dare you play the devils music in the house of the Lord. You should be ashamed of yourself you punk.” Mind you I was 8. She called me a devil and a punk and on top of that literally slapped me so hard I had a red hand print on my face. Since then I have not cared to attend church. I mean is this how people are brainwashed? She could have nicely asked me what I was doing and if I would stop. She didnt have to slap me.

So you see, as much as many churches say they are so innocent and share in the love of life and worship God, I think some of these worshippers take it too far. If this man wasn’t harming anyone and simply wanted to attend the days sermon then why the hell couldn’t he? Churches are supposed to welcome people and make people fell welcome no matter what their religion. ive had people from many different denominational churches ask me to attend their services even if i didnt attend their church or worshipped in their manner. They did it out of the kindness of their hearts and because they truely value dealing with people.

Im not bad mouthing all religions and all people but just making note that there are some out there that really are not as sincere as they make themselves out to be. Just think of all the people that follow Benny Hinn……He has already been proven to be a fraud. I could have told you that. As much as I respect people for their own religious beliefs, please dont give others an entire spiel about why they should be like YOU and worship in the same manner as you. Simply because no two people on this earth are alike and no matter how much we may seem to be…..we are not!

On a side note…..I was raised Catholic. My mother is catholic and my father is baptist. I dont really know what it means to be a catholic but when people ask I tell them. I know how I was raised yet I choose to not attend services. Ive been in catholic, baptist, methodist churches and have also been in temples. When I feel the need to attend a church I do. Ive been invited to different places of worship by friends. I dont mind. I think its interesting to see how others worship and I have taken interest in that. At times ive mentioned Allah and people look at me like im a terrorist. No, im not but people are so damn judgemental. I know I can be. So just because I can read a book about how people came to worship Allah or Jesus Christ and even about Satan that makes me a bad person? i think not. I like to learn what I can. One reason why I bookmark Wikipedia and goto it daily. I chain read things. I read one article and pick different things within it and so on and on. Gives meaning to the phrase, “we learn something new everyday.” I’d like to think I do! As homo sapiens we never stop learning……

Carpe Diem, Sieze the Day!

You know years and years ago when I was younger while working with a particular band I spent a few extra days in Europe at the end of a tour. I flew back to Rome where I stayed and waited in line as I had done other times. This time I actually got blessed by Pope John Paul. As a person that doesn’t goto church this was still a high point in my life because Pope John Paul was the Pope! Now that he is gone I still look back to that day. It was a good day. I grew up with him as Pope. Now there is someone new and im not quite used to that. I was so used to seeing John Paul on tv and at the Vatican when I would go. I went to a dollar store about 2 years ago and bought a book for 2 dollars about the Pope. It was a great read and I discovered more about how he became the Pope….Sorry was just thinking about that as i looked over at my bookshelf and saw the book since this post is about religous stuff…. ok peace out!
